Information regarding disciplinary action taken against police officers is protected under New York law. So leaking the information may well be illegal.

But look what concealing such information showed: there was enough evidence to substantiate four claims that the officer involved had abused his authority, two related to a street stop and two related to a vehicle stop and search.

The punishment for Pantaleo? Retraining and loss of two vacation days.

The punishment for letting the public know about Pantaleo’s disciplinary history and subsequent punishment? Forced resignation.

It is time to rescind New York’s law that seal’s police disciplinary records under the guise of protecting the officer’s right to privacy.
