The Legal Aid Society and other have initiated a suit against the NYPD to open up access to police department records regarding disciplinary hearings of officers.
The suit is requesting that disciplinary summaries be made available to the public. Such summaries were available until 2011. At that time the Police Department said that releasing such information was in violation of state law, Section 5-a of the Civil Rights Code.
It is time to repeal 50-a. This law is an impediment to better policing and to better community-police relations.
